BOSWELL, AUTHOR OF THE JOSHUA OMVIG VETERANS SUICIDE PREVENTION ACT, REACTS TO THE ARMY’S STUDY ON THE HIGH RATE OF SUICIDE AMONG ACTIVE DUTY SOLDIERS
Thursday, January 31, 2008
WILL INTRODUCE THE ARMED FORCES SUICIDE
PREVENTION ACT NEXT WEEK
“The
Army’s study once again reminds us that we
cannot turn our backs on our soldiers and
veterans. We need to provide the
resources and training to help these young
people as they struggle with the strains
resulting from long deployments and being away
from loved ones. While the Army
recognizes the need to do a better job, we need
solutions now.”
“Next week, I plan to
introduce a companion bill to the one Senator
Tom Harkin introduced today, The Armed Forces
Suicide Prevention Act, which will require the
Department of Defense to implement
comprehensive suicide prevention programs
within all branches of the military, including
the National Guard and the Reserves.
While the Joshua Omvig Veterans Suicide
Prevention Act will help our returning
veterans, we must immediately provide help to
our active duty
troops.”
